Kerry Way Day 1 - Sept. 9

Killarney to Black Valley

We decided to do a slight variation on our first day of the Kerry Way by walking counter clockwise around the north side of Lough Leane and through the gap of Dunloe to Black Valley.  By doing this we avoid retracing our route on the Killarney - Galway's Bridge section on the last day.

Up and breakfast in hostel.
A few showers as we walked quiet country roads to start of Gap of Dunloe section.

Stopped Kate Kearney's Cottage for second breakfast, only to learn they don't serve food until lunchtime. Luckily there was a cozy cafe just across the way.

Continued up and over the Gap and down into the Black Valley.

Black Valley Hostel is basic and tidy.  Only two other couples.  We had a private cottage in the back.

Temperatures were cool and hostel owner put on the heat in cottage for us.

No pub or restaurant in Black Valley but a few basic food supplies can be purchased at the hostel.
17 km.

Kerry Way D-1 - Sept 8

Dublin to Killarney

Caught the 1100 hrs train in Dublin for uneventful ride to Killarney, arriving at 1430 hrs.

Dropped off  kit not needed for Kerry Way walk at the Neptune Hostel and bought some groceries for our stay at Black Valley.

Walked the six km in soft rain to Killarney Hostel.  Private room.  Unloaded and walked back short way to local pub for chowder and turkey/ham dinner for R and burger for LR with a few pints.
